Cambodia

When my friends and I booked a trip to Cambodia, I pictured in my head a place filled with temples that are picture perfect nestled in a tropical area. Of course, when we got there, it was more than I expected.

The Kingdom of Cambodia is inhabited by friendly people who have embraced and preserved so much of their history. Their way of life has been greatly influenced by their religion as seen in the designs of their buildings and the ancient temples that were scattered in the country.

We visited three temples such as the Angkor Wat, the Ta Prohm and Bayon Temple. These structures have faced the test of time and forces of nature. The weathered appearance gave more character to these edifices making it even more appealing to our eyes. It's not difficult to imagine that these assemblies were once grand and embellished with precious stones as these were designed to please the gods and enrich spirituality.

At night, the city is even more alive. Specifically, Siem Reap's pub street and night markets are places not to miss. Restaurants, shops and pubs are open everywhere with a fun and welcoming vibe. We had to be judicious when it comes to shopping because this country can offer a lot of beautiful items at affordable prices.

On the other hand, the floating village tour has opened my eyes to another reality in Cambodia. We went to Kampong Phluk, a village in the province in Siem Reap, where houses were built on stilts. During the rainy season, the river grows as high as 15 meters and the forest gets submerged until the dry season comes back. The primary means of living of the folks there are fishing so families own small and big boats. They adjust their livelihood with the seasonal rise and fall of the water.

Cambodia is a memorable trip for me. It opened my eyes to many realities that my words fail to express. Furthermore, I will never forget the warm smiles and the happy disposition that lit up the faces of the Khmer people.
